LIBERTARIANS JUST PROCEED FROM ERROR TO ERROR:
Do natural disasters stimulate economic growth? (Drake Bennett, 7/08/08, The Boston Globe)
Traditionally, analysts have cautioned that Chinese growth figures should be greeted with skepticism, but according to one school of economic thought, there may be something to the idea that the quake served as a brutal stimulus. In fact, some economists argue that despite the widespread destruction they leave behind, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions and ice storms can spur economic growth.Rebuilding efforts provide a short-term boost by attracting resources to the region, economists say. By destroying old factories and roads, airports and bridges, the disasters allow new and more efficient infrastructure to be built, forcing the transition to a sleeker, more productive economy in the long term.
"When something is destroyed you don't necessarily rebuild the same thing that you had," said Mark Skidmore, an economics professor at Michigan State University. "You might use updated technology, you might do things more efficiently."
Studies have found that earthquakes in California and Alaska helped spur economic activity there, and that countries with more hurricanes and storms tend to see higher rates of growth. Some of the most recent studies have found a link between disasters and subsequent innovation.

No one does anything until the Titanic sinks.
Posted by: oj at July 9, 2008 8:55 PMInteresting that the article never mentions the broken window fallacy, which this new data supposedly contradicts.
BTW, this has nothing to do with libertarianism. I'm surprised OJ hasn't dragged Darwin into it, too. He's equally irrelevant.
Posted by: PapayaSF at July 9, 2008 9:16 PMDarwin's error was the Libertarian one, belief in Nature when Design is required.
Posted by: oj at July 10, 2008 7:31 AMRead Tolstoy's description of the after effect of Napolean's sack of Moscow. (War and Peace)
The conventional wisdom after the Chicago fire was that the city would have to "relocate" to be revived. DOH!!
The article points out the obvious. If it isn't broken, break it.
Now all we need is someone to destroy the Republican Party...

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Oh wait - is that too antiquated a thinking?
Here is one: Think of RMS Titanic. Think if the rules were 'slow down to xx speed upon ice warnings'. Think if the rules were changed to reflect the size of the new ships to provide sufficient life boats for all aboard. Think of the contributions that all those lost and their lost descendants could have given this country.
Libetarians need to understand Robinson Crusoe.
