Poland urges closer U.S. ties after Russia shield comment (Patryk Wasilewski, 7/09/08, Reuters)

Russia's angry response to U.S. plans to build a missile shield underlines the need for Europe to seek closer security ties with the United States, a top aide to Polish President Lech Kaczynski said on Wednesday.

...that's called a paradoxical effect.

The Poles have seen the bear before. Does anyone wonder that they feel safer with the bald eagle around than, say, Chanticleer?

For the Rectification of Names fans, note how President Kaczynski is referred to as a "conservative," because he inclines toward the Unite States, while we are accustomed to having Communist throwbacks in the FORMER SOVIET UNION similarly tagged.

So which is it? Who's the conservative? Is it the Communist or the anti-communist?

In a substantive vein, note the transformational effect of the technological displacement of the military threshold. Effective missle defense puts 20th Century forces on the Fuzzy-Wuzzy side of the divide.

I just watched "Katyn" last night. The Poles have more reasons than most to lean towards the US. Katyn was a great recommendation OJ.
