Dems' energy proposals stymied (PATRICK O'CONNOR, 6/26/08, Politico)

Speaker Nancy Pelosi hoped to send House Democrats home for the Fourth of July recess with a series of votes that would show they’re serious about easing the pain at the pump. [...]

The price-gouging bill failed to garner the two-thirds support necessary to pass. An accounting issue forced leaders to put off for a day the so-called “use it or lose it” measure. And the legislation to curb speculation is now caught up in a member fight over the proper path forward — a fight that exposes the misgivings some Democrats have about this activist agenda.

The Democrats could accomplish a lot more if they had leadership who understood that 2006 was not a referendum on Bush and Iraq, no matter what wishful thinking may say.

Don't worry, she'll get better once BarryO is inaugurated.

in 2006, the Stupid Party actually accomplished the impossible, they made the Dems look like the Lesser of Two Evils, despite the Dems being controlled by pre-'94 retreads It was quite an accomplishment, and the only reason the Dems won.. The Whigs or Know-Nothings or Reform or Green Party would have won if they'd been the only other choice on the ballot. They got the rebound date, and confused that for true everlasting-love, which is why they've gotten nowhere.

But come next year, we will deserve every Dem proposal that gets enacted. Because we'll not only have kept these buffoons in power, but taken away the filibuster and veto that kept them in check.

With help from enablers on the right harping about pork and back-stabbing Bush. Even so, it wasn't a bad off-year result six years in to Bush's reign, historically speaking.

No way BHO gets elected. Zippo.

Raoul - The Dem House and Senate have gotten nothing done over the past 2 years due to incompetence and being stymied by the GOP minority. Hard to see them suddenly becoming competent in '09.

For the Dems to win in '09 they have to convince America that Iraq is a lost quagmire (which is becoming impossible to do) that we're in a great depression but they had nothing to do with it, and gas prices are high and they had nothing to do with it. With the Dem Congress approval at all time lows (and 1/2 of Bush's) and Obama gaffing left and right I wouldn't count on it.

I don't expect the Dems to become competent next year. But I also don't expect them to have adult supervision next year, either (no matter who gets elected President). The American public is in the same self destructive mood they were in with Jerry Ford in charge. They'll buy the line that things are terrible, and then proceed to elect the bunch who can actually make things worse.

(One advantage to divided gov't is that no one gets the blame, as the Dems found out the hard way in '93. My fear is that we're going to get four years of a Stupid Party President who covers for the Dems because he craves a legacy of "bipartisanship" and "independence.")

enablers on the right harping about pork

Got that right. I never understood the logic of how putting back into power dinosaurs from the 70s and 80s (Murtha, Hoyer, Leahy, and so many more) who turned pork into an art-form was going to suddenly and magically stop it. But wonder of wonders, notice how so many of those same people in the self-proclaimed center aren't at all worked up about so-called pork now that the Dems are the ones controlling and dispensing it.

Mr. Ortega, I remember a lot of sound and fury pointed at the 2006 Republicans, but I don't remember any of it sticking once the election had passed.... I don't think the Republicans "made" the Democrats look like the lesser of two evils, I think many people, including you from my reading of your post, were played by the Democrats and the Press. I think the Evil party was helped by the never ending trend on the Right to sit this one out and teach "Them" a lesson.

Just a shout out to BroJudd for the most rockin' pithy headlines out there.

"They Turned She Into Newt......".

Too classic!

Legislation? According to what I read this week, the Dems can't even agree to have a press conference on energy.

They know how vulnerable they are. If the theme of "The Don't Drill Democrats" starts to stick, it is all they will hear for the next 4+ months. And any boost the Dems get from the media will be gone. Nobody is going to listen to the media elite talk about the price of gas.
