CRACKS IN THE BRITISH FUNDAMENT:

Immigrant exodus leads to DIY cost hike (Harry Wallop, 02/06/2008, Daily Telegraph)

Home owners looking to boost the value of their home in the face of falling prices are having to pay record amounts for improvements.

The price of building work has risen by 20 per cent over the past two years due to a lack of skilled tradesmen and the rising cost of building materials, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The number of builders and decorators is declining fast due to an exodus of central and eastern European nationals. There were an estimated one million British-based Poles at one time but half have now left the UK, which has led to competition for labour and so rising costs.

One of the things that makes Max Brooks's World War Z so enjoyable is that it's as much insidious political commentary as horror story. One of the best bits is that after the zombie apocalypse only America's illegal aliens know how to repair the basic stuff that's broken.

One of the great strengths of America is that so many people do know how to fix things. After my childhood following dad around, and working out at Camp Dearborn, I can do basic carpentry, plumbing, electricity, glazing, etc.

I'm listening to the audio version of this right now - it is great!!

In fact I've just begun to work my way through oj's A+ rated fiction from his review section as a summer reading project.

oj - expect an message in a month or so with my thoughts on these. So far I've read Daughters of Cain , and I'm working on WWZ (summer started this week).
