McCain Rises and Obama Dips in Fund-Raising for May (LESLIE WAYNE, 6/22/08, NY Times)

After raising record amounts of money all year, Mr. Obama continued spending heavily as the primary campaign extended into early June, and he ended May with $33.3 million in cash for the primary race. Mr. McCain, who raised less all year, was virtually assured of the Republican nomination by February and so spent less, ending the month with $31.6 million in the bank.

Once again we see how little money means in politics. After a year as a cash-raising phenomenon, Senator Obama ends up with the same amount of money as John McCain and, despite the latter spending nothing, at a spot in national polls where Democrats always lose five months later. Even Michael Dukakis had a three-times greater lead before being blown out.

Questions: What prevents foreign deep pockets, such as the Saudis, to channel their bribes to the campaigns, presidential and others, via the internet using phantom small donors?

"bribes"? Wrong word. Bribes for the rest of the world. For us, it is called "campaign contributions".

Question: What does Saudi money buy them compared to the voters desire for cheap gas?

It's not Saudi money, it is George Soros who is funding Obama.

How'd Soros do in '04?

Posted by: oj at June 22, 2008 8:30 PM

Soros made it close in '04. A war-time president in a booming economy should have won by at least 10 points.

Polk, Wilson, Truman and LBJ couldn't even run after starting wars and GHWB lost after winning his. Americans enjoy starting wars but lose interest in them quickly.

Soros did better in 04 than 2000, and will do better in 2008. As I've pointed out often here, the left has invested heavily in organization - not ad for idiots.

That paid off in 04, and more obviously in 3 "Republican districts" now Dem.

Seeing the benefits of Rove's organization machine, they decided to redelpoy, and their natural base (Unions, youth comfortable w/ tech, the easily scared) is helping them lap Republicans
in organizing.

It is very likely that the election will be much closer than OJ thinks, and McCain (still favored) will have a tough fight.

Soros is just a bogeyman. He gives large amounts of money to organizations that waste it. He has about as much impact as I do on politics.

Soros would be broke if he had many payoffs like '04.
