HOW CAN YOU TELL CONGRESSMAN SCHULTZ FROM SARGEANT SCHULTZ?:

Your car can't run on Congress' hot air (MARK STEYN, 5/23/08, OC Register)

I was watching the Big Oil execs testifying before Congress. That was my first mistake. If memory serves, there was lesbian mud wrestling over on Channel 137, and on the whole that's less rigged. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz knew the routine: "I can't say that there is evidence that you are manipulating the price, but I believe that you probably are. So prove to me that you are not."

Had I been in the hapless oil man's expensive shoes, I'd have answered, "Hey, you first. I can't say that there is evidence that you're sleeping with barnyard animals, but I believe that you probably are. So prove to me that you are not. Whatever happened to the presumption of innocence and prima facie evidence, lady? Do I have to file a U.N. complaint in Geneva that the House of Representatives is in breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?"

But that's why I don't get asked to testify before Congress.

The least Congress could do is approve that legal standard for the Gitmo trials.

That quote is beyond belief.

How is it that Mark Steyn digs up these golden nuggets of inane left-wing stupidity that keep evading the rest of us?

Matt:

Of course, at the same hearing, Maxine Waters said we need to 'socialize' the oil companies ('uh, you know, have the government take the whole thing over').

Steyn might have had the oil execs reply - "Well, we believe we are very social, Ma'am. After all, probably 75% of the American public own shares in our companies. And your approval rating is around 15%, I believe. QED." Not that Maxine would have have understood that, either.

Ratbert - according to blogs an oil company executive followed up Waters comment with saying that would make the US just like Venezuela and the US Govt just like Chavez. The Dems probably thought that was a compliment.

The oil execs proved over and over the inability to drill for more oil and develop refineries, nuclear plants, etc led to the situation we are in but since it was a show hearing none of it mattered.

If the RNC had half a brain, this would be a winning issue for the GOP.

Just modify the ad they ran in 1980 with the Tip lookalike sniffing at the gas tank as it ran down to empty.
