VERGES?:

Obamamania verges on obsession (Lisa Lerer, Feb 20, 2008, Politico)

"This is not a campaign for president of the United States, this is a movement to change the world," [Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings] said as he introduced Obama last week in Baltimore.

"You do not get 13,000 people in this auditorium with a campaign."

As over the top as it may have sounded, Cummings' sentiments weren't all that unusual.

Because when it comes to Obama, hyperbole seems to be the rule, not the exception.

His charms seem tough to resist, even for some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

"He walks into a room and you want to follow him somewhere, anywhere," George Clooney told talk show host Charlie Rose.

"I'll do whatever he says to do," actress Halle Berry said to the Philadelphia Daily News.

"Cut your hair and let me call you Ted?"

I understand the children: I was young that way once--it was 1964.

Bill Clinton is grumbling, "Man, I only got Monica and he gets Halle Berry? I must not be as black as I thought."

One would think most of these people are old enough to recognize an infatuation, but apparently not. The inevitable collision with reality will certainly be a sight to see, won't it? The wailing, the tears, the gnashing of teeth, the bitter accusations of foul play and conspiracy. Let's just hope it happens before the election.

This is getting truly scary. It's not even a cult anymore, it's in the ball park of a certain German chancellor between 1933 and 1945 at the height of his popularity, somewhere between 1938 and 1939.

I suppose it's a good thing American conservatives tend to own guns, because they might need them to shoot the jack-booted followers of the Dear Leader when they come knocking on their doors at night.

Reading what George Clooney said, I couldn't help but think of OJ and his cellmate dreams.

Except that if you let either of them make you their bitch, you're gay. They're catcher material, not pitcher.

Randall:
I don't know, Bill Clinton got himself a big fat white woman. Sounds like every black man's dream me.

Was that wrong? I've been reading old 70's-era issues of National Lampoon, so my sense of what's appropriate humor for the 21st century may need recalibration.
