OFFENSIVE IS FINE IF IT'S FUNNY... (via The Mother Judd):

An Ad With Talking Pandas, Maybe, but Not With Chinese Accents (STUART ELLIOTT, 2/06/08, NY Times)

THE sponsor of two commercials during Super Bowl XLII for Salesgenie.com, which drew complaints from viewers because of the characters’ ethnic accents, says he is sorry and promises to stop running one of them.

Vinod Gupta, the chairman and chief executive of InfoUSA in Omaha, the parent of Salesgenie.com, said in a telephone interview Tuesday that a commercial featuring two animated pandas speaking with what were intended as Chinese accents would be withdrawn.

“We never thought anyone would be offended,” said Mr. Gupta, who developed and wrote both commercials himself.

...but the ad wasn't just offensive, it was moronic.

Vinod Gupta a big buddy with the Clintons? So much so that some of the shareholders of InfoUSA got pissed about him lavishing the Clintons with largess.

Exactly how should animated pandas speak English?

Pandas should be seen and not heard.

If I may go off topic for a moment - Pandas are stupid. Everyone's always trying to save their dumb hinders when in reality they are nothing but an evolutionary cul-de-sac. What is their sole food? Bamboo, and only a certain type of bamboo at that. The reproduce less often than tony Manhattan socialites. They're not an essential link in the food chain - we're not going to be overrun by carnivorous bamboo plants if the pandas die out. The only reason why they haven't gone extinct by now is because we keep saving them.
Frankly, I will gladly eat the last surviving panda.
