EVEN IF THE INTELLECTUALS ARE CONSERVATIVE...:

The rise and gall of McCain: Conservatives can't claim his wins - and they don't like that. (Dick Polman, 2/03/08, The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The Republicans have lucked out. They appear poised to nominate a guy who can actually win the presidential election in November - a possibility few Republicans had seemed willing to entertain, given the heavy baggage of George W. Bush.

And yet, party conservatives seem apoplectic about John McCain's surprising rise. Shrugging off his electability, they are fixated on his ideological impurity. For all their professed fealty to Ronald Reagan - a name invoked so often it has been shortened to Runnarigin - they are willfully violating the Runnarigin Rule, which holds that "the person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and ally."

The purity enforcers don't realize how good they have it. Barring a near-miraculous late surge by Mitt Romney, the party will wind up tapping a hawkish career conservative who has pull with independent swing voters.

...Americans, happily, have a great disregard for their beliefs.

But . . . McCain's a LIBERAL!11111!!!!1111!

(or so I've been told by "conservative" talk radio and frothing bloggers and their commentators).

Ummmm.... He's a liberal. He almost changed parties, remember? Why does he only crack on and stick his finger into the chest of and yell at conservatives?

He's a pro-life liberal/democrat at heart like OJ...

he might be right and I understand why you and OJ and others refuse to admit he's a liberal...

but c'mon.

Benny that's absolutely absurd.

McCain's lifetime ACU rating is 83.

To put that into perspective, a right-leaning Dem like Evan Bayh has a lifetime 21 rating.

You ought to be embarassed.
