CAN'T SAY HE'S NEVER DONE ANYTHING FOR THE PARTY ANYMORE (via The Mother Judd):

Romney Drops Out of GOP Race (Ghris Cillizza, 2/07/08, Washington Post)

He revealed his decision during a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

In his speech to CPAC, Romney said that conservative principles are needed now more than ever to meet "challenges which threaten our prosperity, our security and our future," and suggested that he was stepping aside for the greater good of his party and the country.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win," he said. [...]

"Numbers are numbers," said one senior Romney strategist. "It was impossible to get them to add up."

"The party is more important than any one candidate," the source added.

Mr. Romney could have saved himself some money had he figured out that the exit polls are lying. The media keeps holding off on making calls because their polling shows John McCain losing or barely beating Mitt because he's not doing as well among "conservatives" but then the actual vote tallies show him ahead by wide margins. You'd almost have to be a radio talking head not to figure that one out: John McCain is the conservative option in this race; that's why Rudy didn't run and today the other Northeastern liberal drops out.

McCain is almost as conservative as Hillary, but atleast he's not a liberal like Mitt.

EXACTLY! Brian.

OJ should have written "conservative"...

It seems McCain is popular amongst all conservatives, except for a subset that has an axe to grind and doesn't hesitate to button-hole a pollster in order to share the details of their rage.
