HOW'S THAT WORKIN' OUT FOR YA?:
Saddam Hussein'pretended to have weapons': Saddam Hussein deliberately allowed the world to believe he had weapons of mass destruction but did not expect the United States to stage a major invasion and overthrow him, the former Iraqi dictator told an FBI interrogator (Ben Martin, 1/27/08, Daily Telegraph)
George Piro, an FBI special agent who interrogated Saddam after his capture in December 2003, said the dictator told him he used the pretence of having the weapons to deter Iran, Iraq's long-standing rival."For him, it was critical that he was seen as still the strong, defiant Saddam. He thought that would prevent the Iranians from reinvading Iraq," Mr Piro told 60 Minutes, the American current affairs television programme.
But he miscalculated the response by the US-led coalition, expecting only a limited military attack, rather than a full-scale invasion. "He thought the US would retaliate with the same type of attack as we did in 1999...a four-day aerial attack," said Mr Piro.
Kim Jong Il needs to be taught the same lesson about bluffing. Posted by Orrin Judd at January 26, 2008 9:58 PM
Oh com'on, the government knew all along about the WMD bluff. They didn't debunk it back then because they needed it to promote the war in Iraq. It was never about WMD, it was about establishing military pressence in the Middle East.
Posted by: NPC at January 27, 2008 11:12 PMBefore the invasion, Saddam stated, so many times, that Iraq was WMD free. The UN inspector Hans Blix also stated that Iraq was WMD free. Everybody knew that: for the middle east, only Israel possess WMD.
Therefore, this is another fat big lie designed by the war criminals in the White House.

Everybody did? That's not what I recall. And taking the word of a liar like Hussein or a UN functionary like Blix isn't, shall we say, particularly reasonable.

Yes, everyone did. The war had nothing to do with WMD.
