BREAK UP THE RAYS:

Top five prospects by position (Keith Law, 11/29/08, ESPN)

Right-handed pitcher

1. Joba Chamberlain, New York Yankees
2. Clay Buchholz, Boston
3. Homer Bailey, Cincinnati
4. Wade Davis, Tampa Bay
5. Rick Porcello, Detroit

Left-handed pitcher

1. Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers
2. Franklin Morales, Colorado
3. David Price, Tampa Bay
4. Jake McGee, Tampa Bay
5. Manny Parra, Milwaukee

When people complain about the dominance of the AL East a couple years from now they'll mean Tampa Bay.

Agreed about the Rays. Of course, even with all that talent, they may still find a way to blow it.

But . . . Porcello at #5? As far as I can tell, he hasn't even thrown a pitch as a pro. He's straight out of high school. And he's from the baseball poor Northeast. Has he ever faced a decent hitter in his entire life? Has Law lost his mind?

Keep in mind the Rays can't afford to keep either of them and they'll wind up in NY, Boston, Detroit three years from now.

They can afford them. They may choose not to.
