Afghan, international forces retake Taliban town (The Associated Press, 12/10/07)

Afghan and international forces have retaken a southern town held by Taliban insurgents since February, the Afghan Defence Ministry said Monday. The Taliban said it retreated from the town to avoid both its own and civilian casualties.

This is an opportunity, which we'll fail to take advantage of, to taunt the Islamicists about choosing dishonor over death.

You're right, we won't, and actually they opt for both:

I don't know about that "dishonor over death" line in connection with a withdrawal from a populated area. Actually, such a withdrawal is quite consistent with the law of land warfare. We are talking about the open city concept, whereby a belligerant withdraws forces from a city to spare it from attack by the enemy.

One of our consistent complaints about the enemy's way of war is his willingness to hide and treacherously strike from behind protected persons and places. I have doubts about his sincerity, but this finding of conscience could be a mark of that reformation some of us think is possible.

Talk about asymmetrical warfare. If they can be stopped by the fear of collateral damage they have no hope against us.
