Iran builds a new road to aid Lebanese allies (Tim Butcher, 07/12/2007, Daily Telegraph)

Under the cover of an aid project, Iran is consolidating Shia control over southern Lebanon by building a large mountain road that critics believe is a supply route for Hizbollah.

While Iran claims the road is nothing but a reconstruction project after the 2006 war with Israel, some observers believe it is a key component of the militant group's rearmament programme.

Iranian money is also creating two new Shia villages to protect the road at the expense of the country's non-Shia communities, including the Druze and Sunni Muslims.

Together, the road and the villages now threaten to destroy the delicate balance between the various ethnic groups in the aftermath of Lebanon's 15-year civil war.

Lebanon's imbalance is openly aimed at suppressing the Shi'a in favor of the minority Christians and Sunni.

The CIA factbook put the Christian population at 39% but doesn't break down the Muslim 61% into Shia/Sunni.

The NY Times puts the population at 35% Christian, 35% Shit and 25% Sunni.

Where are you getting the idea that the Shia constitute a majority of the population of Lebanon?

Iran helps the Shia of south Lebanon in the same way that Fatah helped the Palestinians.

In both cases the people become cannon fodder.

How ungrateful of us, after all the wonderful things the Shia have done for us! Not to mention their regular offers of peace towards us and our allies.

A word to the wise: never trust a political movement that puts an AK-47 on their flag.

Everyone acknowledges they're the majority or close, which is why they fixed the old census and won't hold another.

Fatah seized a state from a great power, as the Irgun did, no small things.

Who is "everyone"? The only person I ever hear claim the Shia are a majority is you.

They may well be - statistics have been rigged before - but I've never seen any evidence.

Why do you think the government refuses to do a census?
