After reading briefly from the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the author told an audience in New York that the wizard Albus Dumbledore, head of Hogwarts school, is gay.Speaking at Carnegie Hall on Friday night, Rowling confirmed what some fans had always suspected - that she "always thought Dumbledore was gay".

What possibly could be the purpose of this revelation? It had no bearing on any of the stories and will now probably taint them in some people's eyes.
Posted by: AWW at October 20, 2007 11:27 AMI haven't read the books but I assume that his sexuality was never referenced. So I don't see any point in her outing him, unless she sensed that this was what her audience wanted to hear.
She needed to counterbalance the statement that the series was inspired by her Christian faith. Both "revelations" are shrewd marketing, which is what the Potter empire excels at (I found the first book unreadably bad, and couldn't get through the first 200 pages).
