GREAT, THE KIDS WILL SPEND NEXT SUMMER...:

Broccoli may outperform sunblock (Rick Weiss, 10/23/07, The Washington Post)

George H.W. Bush: Call your dermatologist.

New research suggests broccoli, the vegetable that the former president famously demonized as inedible, can prevent the damage from ultraviolet light that often leads to skin cancer. And as Bush would surely appreciate, he would not even have to eat it.

In tests on people and hairless mice, a green smear of broccoli-sprout extract blocked the potentially cancer-causing damage usually inflicted by sunlight and showed potential advantages over sunscreens.

...looking like J'onn J'onzz.

Sure they've tested it on the main two target groups - people and hairless mice - but what about, um, wait, did the article say "people"? That's who gets tested along with hairless mice?! The PETA lobby is stronger than I thought - no monkeys, hairy mice or fruit flies were harmed during this test!

The article gets better...

"Among other issues to be worked out is how best to remove the extract's green pigments, which do not contribute to its protective effects and would give users a temporary Martian complexion."

You know the look - green with space suits and ray guns. I am so surprised we didn't see this in Scientific American first...

Wouldn't the broccoli tint be a bit darker than the Martian Manhunter? Say, like the She-Hulk?

When, as a kid, I had chicken pox, the pediatrician told my mother to dot each pox with gentian violet. I don't recall that it eased the itching all that much, but I do recall being covered with purple polka dots for way too long!
