DID HE HAVE HIS STUFFED TIGER WITH HIM?:

Boy, 6, tries to drive to Applebees: Hungry kid grabs car keys, booster seat, makes it about 75 feet in reverse (10/10/07, Associated Press)

A 6-year-old boy was hungry and decided he'd go to Applebees. So he grabbed the car keys, took his booster seat from the back seat of his grandmother's car and placed it in the driver's seat, then made a go of driving himself to the restaurant Tuesday.

He made it about 75 feet. Unable to take the car out of reverse, he crossed the street and ran into a transformer and communication box, knocking out electricity and phone service to dozens of townhomes.

Nobody was injured and the boy, whose name was not released, got out of his car and told his grandmother what happened.

erp:

I've found that kids, in particular, love the strip -- as I did when I was young. Watterson is one of those rare people who remembers childhood and reports it accurately, without rose-tinted glasses or a patronizing attitude. This is a rare gift.

I recently bought the complete set of C&H. It's expensive, large, and unwieldy, with illustrations that are humongous.

Oh man, is it great.

I've seriously thought of buying that volume, but it seems such a frivolous thing to do. I have many of the soft cover cartoon books. We used to give them to each other for Christmas presents when the kids were young.

A couple of years ago when she was about ten, my French granddaughter whose English wasn’t that good yet was visiting and she spent a lot of time giggling over those books.

Reminded me that I learned to speak, read and write English by devouring c. 40’s comic books. Not in the same ball park, but might entertaining all the same.
