WHICH IS WHY IT'S SO AMUSING...:
U.S. requires better head protection in auto crashes (John Crawley, 9/05/07, Reuters)
The U.S. government on Wednesday effectively ordered auto manufacturers to install the most advanced head and side air bags in new vehicles starting in 2009 by demanding more protection for drivers and passengers in side-impact crashes. The first ever National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requirement primarily aimed at reducing head injuries will force manufacturers to satisfy more aggressive crash test criteria than they had planned.
"With these rigorous new requirements, we are building on the strength of innovative and life-saving side impact technologies that are already available to many new car buyers," NHTSA administrator Nicole Nason said.

Why not just extend helmet laws to all vehicles?

Posted by: oj at September 5, 2007 11:03 PMYou honestly don't see the difference between devices that deploy in a crash, and devices that assume you are drunk when you get into the car and won't allow you to drive until you prove otherwise?!? I can assure you that the average American can.

Posted by: mcf at September 6, 2007 12:28 AMYes, one catches criminals who are responsible for 40% of the driving deaths in this country. In other words, every year it would save five times the lives lost on 9-11.

"Volvo is offering a tool to help drivers realize when they are too drunk to drive.
Its Alcoguard device tests alcohol levels in drivers and will be available as an option on its 2008 Volvo S80, V70 and XC70 models in Sweden, the U.S. and Europe."

Posted by: Rick T. at September 6, 2007 8:49 AMThe same way anti-drunk driving devices will only catch those who really aren't a danger on the highway, because the habitual drunk drivern will have such devices bypassed the day after they buy the car.
The greatest danger to our liberties is the way a large segment of conservatives have joined the Left in a campaign to criminalize large aspects of our life by using the excuse that they making society safer and healthier.
All conservatism consists of is making society more Christian. The notion that 15,000 people need to be killed every year unnecessarily because of your selfishness is libertarianism, not conservatism.
Posted by: oj at September 6, 2007 10:28 AMYou won't need to buy a Volvo, they'll be mandatory. But I don't care about having one in my car. I want one in yours.
Posted by: oj at September 6, 2007 10:41 AM"But I don't care about having one in my car. I want one in yours."
And thus both ends of the political spectrum are joined to form a circle.
Posted by: Rick T. at September 6, 2007 11:49 AMthat's all liberty consists of--my willingness to be bound by a law so that you are. No one not a drunk will mind binding drunks.
Posted by: oj at September 6, 2007 2:32 PMI misunderstood your meaning. My bad.
Posted by: Rick T. at September 6, 2007 5:14 PMGun control for cars, which explains how it helps us understand the gun-grabber mentality.
Posted by: Lou Gots at September 6, 2007 5:33 PMGuns will be required to have passive recognition too.
