THE COLONEL WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD:
Top U.S. official to go to Libya to cement ties (Sue Pleming, 8/15/07, Reuters)
The State Department's point man on Libya will visit there next week to cement closer ties with Tripoli and plan a visit by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday. [...]Posted by Orrin Judd at August 15, 2007 8:22 PMSuch a visit would be a tangible sign of the improved relationship.
"We have a very important chance to memorialize the shift in the relationship," said the official of a visit by Rice. "We have not set a date for it but the goal would be for that to happen this year."
Relations between the United States and Libya, a major oil producer, have improved dramatically since Tripoli gave up weapons of mass destruction in 2003.
Does this give proof that we have finally subdued the Barbary Pirates, or are we just kidding outselves?

You first.
Perhaps Dr. Rice can ask Qaddafi about the finer points of genital torture. I'm sure the recent prisoners could enlighten her.
Would the US have paid $460 million for 5 hostages?
Posted by: ratbert at August 15, 2007 10:10 PMIn a heartbeat.

Posted by: oj at August 16, 2007 7:07 AMLook it seems he was the least crazy of the middle east mad men; but he still financed
the PLO and other miscreants. Plus, our good friend Sarkozy? is giving him the nuclear reactors so we have to disarm him down the road.
The PLO won. Time to get over it.

Now, that might be a hot commodity for a few bosses and satraps, but it has meant $#*@ for the average Palestinian (especially in relationships with their Arab "brethren").
Posted by: ratbert at August 16, 2007 9:15 PMStatehood. All that's let is quibbling over details.
