NATIVISM IS LITERALLY UNAMERICAN:

Immigration Bill Provisions Gain Wide Support in Poll (JULIA PRESTON and MARJORIE CONNELLY, 5/25/07, NY Times)

As opponents from the right and left challenge an immigration bill before Congress, there is broad support among Americans — Democrats, Republicans and independents alike — for the major provisions in the legislation, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

Taking a pragmatic view on a divisive issue, a large majority of Americans want to change the immigration laws to allow illegal immigrants to gain legal status and to create a new guest worker program to meet future labor demands, the poll found. [...]

Two-thirds of those polled said illegal immigrants who had a good employment history and no criminal record should gain legal status as the bill proposes, which is by paying at least $5,000 in fines and fees and receiving a renewable four-year visa.

Many Republican lawmakers have rejected this plan, calling it amnesty that rewards immigrants who broke the law when they entered the United States. But the poll showed that differences are not great between Republicans and Democrats on this issue, with 66 percent of Republicans in the poll favoring the legalization proposal, as well as 72 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of independents.

Which two thirds of the American people want they get.

This is shameless dissimulation. You have already admitted that the bill is all give and no take. The phony survey asks the respondents how they feel about a package which includes balanced provisions which we all know will never be effected.

The poll also made the question choice between some type of legalizing and mass deportation. Of course the legalizing will win when the question is framed that way. And many have pointed out that NYT, as usual, won't publish the details behind the poll headlines so the numbers cannot be verified.

Every poll has show the same results. Facts aren't wrong because you disagree.

Lou:

Admitted? The point of the bill is to legalize the illegals, which we do periodically as per the wishes of the American people.

OJ -this poll was the outlier. Rasmussen and other polls show much stronger sentiment toward border security and enforcement than for amnesty.

All polls show vast support for both and have for years...and none for making the sacrifices that enforcement would require. Just make immigrants legal and you require no enforcement anyway.

I'm curious - Norm Coleman's amendment (prohibiting 'sanctuary' cities) was defeated 49-48 - with Akaka changing his vote at the end, and Brownback (and another Republican I cannot remember) not voting. A real profile in courage, eh?

Is asking a suspect about his 'status' harassment? What about producing a valid driver's license (or a passport)?

Were they questioned on the specifics of the current bill?

I don't think so.

Keep grasping, OJ.

I'm all for amnesty and find things like putting up walls along the Mexican border absurd, but that said, real courage from our pols would mean proposing a massive increase in the numbers of immigrants we allow in each year, especially from south of the border. We made a dreadful mistake in what, the 20s?, when we closed off the spigot -- thanks nativists of yesteryear.

This beame especially apparent after Roe, since when millions of Americans have been butchered in the womb.

When will our reps step up and open the legal gates?

No one cares about the specifics. Americans want their immigrants but want them legal.

Why shouldn't political entities that aren't racist be able to welcome immigrants? How quickly the Right dumps federalism when its phobias come into play.

Yes, the one real dark spot on Coolidge's presidency.
