Of course the inclusion of Cuba in Tovarisch Gupta's list makes it farcical.

Let us, however, explore oj's comment about countries and nations.

Our averages do quite well, given our culturally heterognous population. Consider how well Americans of various ethnicities do compared to those left behind in all the places from which we have come.

Two points: 1) The U.S. leads the industrialized world in fertility treatments, which mean more multiple births, translating to higher rates of premature delivery. 2) The U.S. medical system will try to save preemies that in other countries would be counted as stillborn.
