FLORIDA IN THE HIGHLANDS:

Labour and SNP go down to the wire (WILL SPRINGER, 5/04/07, The Scotsman)

THE Labour Party maintained a slight edge over their Scottish Nationalist counterparts today as efforts to determine who will lead the Scottish Parliament became overshadowed by electoral chaos.

The Electoral Commission announced it will conduct a full inquiry into problems with the new electronic counting system that resulted in several counts being suspended. As many as 100,000 ballots were also rejected because they were classed as spoilt papers.

The final outcome of the national election remained uncertain, as results from each continuency trickled in during the day.
