WAY TO RUB SAUL IN HIS WOUNDS:

Law & Order Candidate Trumps Romney (Ryan Sager, March 21, 2007, NY Sun)

The lawyer-turned-actor-turned-senator-turned-actor -- best known from TV as the down-home, tough-as-nails District Attorney Arthur Branch on "Law & Order" -- hasn't announced, hasn't campaigned, and hasn't been on the political radar since leaving the Senate in 2003. Yet suddenly he's being hailed as the next Ronald Reagan. With this kind of rhetorical heat at his back, Mr. Thompson's a threat to every candidate for the Republican nomination.

But there's one candidate whose campaign he could end almost instantaneously, should he choose to run: that of Mr. Romney. Mr. Thompson is pro-life, pro-gun, anti-gay marriage, and anti-tax -- like Mr. Romney. But he has one advantage over the former governor: He didn't just come to these positions over the last year or so, in a "Road to Des Moines" conversion.

I share Mr. Thompson's positions on the issues named above, but alas, nobody is trumpeting me for president. Too short, ya think?

Whoever is behind this feint to the right is very foolish. We should looking for someone who can build on the job that Bush started, not someone who hasn't ever even shown he can balance his own checkbook.

Besides a stint as Senator, Thompson's got no experience. That's my biggest beef against Obama (there are others) - absolute lack of any executive type leadership skills. People keep trying to compare Thompson to Reagan. Please... Reagan ran the state of California for crying out loud. Thompson on the other hand, resigned from the Senate so he could move to Hollywood - where he is hardly running anything. Mr. Romney on the other hand has a tremendous amount of executive experience - that quite franky trumps anyone who is currently running or 'considering' running. Just finished Hugh Hewitts new book on Romney, "A Mormon in the White House..." Highly recommended. Points out that anti-Mormon sentimient is his greatest danger. Quite frankly, I believe Mr. Hewitt is right. Otherwise Republicans would already be flocking to Mitt Romney. Before discounting Mitt Romney as an MSM tagged "flip-flopper", I suggest you read the book and actually find something out about the man. It's that whole doing your research thing...

Running MA liberally doesn't count for much in GOP primaries as witness Mitt's race away from his own past. His problem isn't just that people are uncomfortable with Mormonism, but that when his faith was uncomfortable for him politically he ignored it and embraced the Culture of Death instead.
