HOW'D HOWARD LOSE AN EXCHANGE WITH THIS GUY?:
Obama regrets saying soldiers' lives 'wasted' (LYNN SWEET, 2/13/07, Chicago Sun-Times)
In his first stumble, White House hopeful Barack Obama on Monday took back words from the day before, when he said the lives of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq were "wasted."Posted by Orrin Judd at February 13, 2007 9:01 AMFollowing his Springfield launch on Saturday, Obama wrapped up a three-day swing in the key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, ending at a University of New Hampshire rally where he assailed the "trivialization of politics" where "it is all about who makes a gaffe."
In this case, that would be Obama, the Illinois Democrat.
During his first press conference as a presidential candidate at Iowa State University, Obama, discussing his opposition to the Iraq war, said the war "should have never been authorized, and should have never been waged, and on which we've now spent $400 billion, and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.''
He didn't
Posted by: Fugate at February 13, 2007 10:53 AMIn a couple of weeks, Obama has gone from being the black Bobby Kennedy to the black Walter Mondale (or George McGovern). The nutroots may love it, but they're what, 12-15%? Probably less.
Posted by: jim hamlen at February 13, 2007 11:10 AMJim: "12-15%" Are you crazy? Try 0.12-0.15%. The percentage of the voting population that has even heard of "blogs" isn't 15%. Thank goodness.

First, the media will carry so much of this guy's water that he'll easily get past this flap.
Next, even the far right ranters believe that lives have been "wasted." The media has so many convinced that we've lost that I'll be a close to a majority agree.
I've never understood the "wahoo" position that one can't criticize policy and still wish the best for the troops. If a future president Obama sent troops to prop up a failing Chavez, who here wouldn't argue that any deaths were "wasted?"
This will be an interesting test to see if this hurts, helps, or does nothing re: his numbers. A good portion of the nation believes he's correct.
If the right was smart, they'd start calling the 56,000 dead in Viet Nam "wasted" and argue that electing Obama is a virtual guarantee that the X,X00 dead in Iraq will be "wasted" by the simple operation of another Democrat surrender in the face of what was really a victory.

I actually was guessing at the percentage of nutsos in the Democratic primary pool, but you are probably right. I should have just said 1% and left it at that.
