Unless Jeff Weaver is your idea of a big-time free agent, we're sliding into the New Year plum out of them. Unless, that is, you want to wait around for Roger Clemens to make up his mind about playing. Again.

But it's never too early for next winter. Here's a look at a dozen of the most intriguing players who could hit the free-agent market next winter.


The scary thing is that the absurdly inflated contracts of this winter have been driven by the shortage of good players on the market, but they've set baselines that next year's excellent crop will use. Bet the owners wish they could go back to Charlie Finley's idea at the dawn of free agency, to put everyone on one year contracts and glut the market every year.

Look at how short Drew's contract is. Bobby Abreu, who is the same player on the field, will get more years next year at a more advanced age.

He is, but his lineup spot is blocked by Manny. Statistically, he's the most likely player in major league baseball to have a breakout season this year.
