MAVERICK CAN MAIL THIS ONE IN:

Zogby New Hampshire: 3 Dems In Tight Race; McCain Leads Republican Field (Zogby, 1/18/07)

On the Republican side, maverick Sen. John McCain leads with 26% support, six points ahead of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in a race where the two with reputations for independence outdistance the field in a state where independence is a valued trait. In a distant third place is former Gov. Mitt Romney, who led neighboring Massachusetts for one term before leaving office just over two weeks ago.

Cakewalk.

Wow, he's been campaigning for the last 4 years, he won NH last time around, and he's only up 6!

Things are worse for him than I thought.

His support among 'independent' voters has cratered too. From 49% last year down to 29% this year.

Who cares what happens in NH? NH and Iowa are media hypes, driven by paucity of hard knowledge leading up to them.

The primary will be over on Feb 5, 2008, when the bulk of the South and West weigh in. This primary schedule is geared to nominate McCain.

The South and West are where McCain is the weakest. From McCain-Feingold to open borders to the judge deal he isn't popular. Jim and TPS are right - given his name recognition and previous efforts he should be well ahead in NH, not barely scraping by.

Up six on a guy who isn't going to run because even he realizes his popularity is an illusion. It's an easy campaign for Maverick. The surprise is that Romney does so poorly in the state he'd have to win.

And now the little people are to be regulated, thank you Maverick.

McCain and Bush are now joined at the hip re: Iraq and the "surge". If Bush pulls off any semblance of victory ... and I am 80% confident he will ... McCain looks mighty good. Otherwise, he's toast.

Republicans in the South and the West are not voting for two Northeast liberals, one who is a Democratic clone on every issue that maaters to the primary voters (and who will most probably not even run), and the other a sometime on-again, off-again "conservative" from a cult relgion.

Horses of a less pale hue, then, if the Iraq venture does not end well.

Posted by: ghostcat at January 18, 2007 10:07 PM

The polls say he's popular with Republicans there too.

If McCain isn't even challenged in NH the race will be over already.

McCain's support is an inch thick and a mile wide. The MSM is already turning on him which will reduce his standing with independents and soft Dems. He is one outburst away from being put in the back of the pack.

Posted by: AWW at January 19, 2007 8:38 AM

Having the media howl at him will simply strengthen his already solid standing as an independent leader.
