JUST NOW FIGURING OUT THEY'RE UNSERIOUS?:

Get serious, Democrats (Robert Kuttner, January 6, 2007, Boston Globe)

DEMOCRATS in Congress plan to restore pay-as-you-go budget rules. The rules preclude tax cuts, unless paid for by other tax increases or spending cuts. This is mostly a good idea -- but unless Democrats get serious about repealing Bush's tax cuts for the rich, the result could be further cuts in social outlays for the regular people whom Democrats supposedly champion.

Which is why pay-as-you-go would be a huge victory for the GOP right now.

They're interested in pay-as-you-go only as a means of blocking renewal of the Bush tax cuts in 2010.

They're in power now and want to spend money--pay-as-you-go stops them. The GOP returns in '08 and will be reforming the entire tax code.

The best we can hope for is 2 years of stalement preventing a bunch of new spending or repeal of the tax cuts.

GOP return in '08? Just like the 60 in '06?

W has the Democrats to force him out of Iraq now.
