DIVORCED FROM REALITY:
The Second Holocaust (BENNY MORRIS, January 22, 2007, NY Sun)
The second Holocaust will not be like the first. The Nazis, of course, industrialized mass murder. But still, the perpetrators had one-on-one contact with the victims. They may have dehumanized them, over months and years of appalling debasement and in their minds, before the actual killing. But, still, they were in eye- and ear-contact, sometimes in tactile contact, with their victims. The second Holocaust will be quite different. One bright morning, in five or 10 years' time, perhaps during a regional crisis, perhaps out of the blue, a day or a year or five years after Iran's acquisition of the bomb, the mullahs in Qom will convoke in secret session, under a portrait of the steely-eyed Ayatollah Khomeini, and give President Ahmadinejad, by then in his second or third term, the go ahead.
If you want folks to take your warnings seriously, it's best not to advertise your ignorance so spectacularly. Posted by Orrin Judd at January 22, 2007 12:20 PM
The only way to prevent this from happening is credible deterrence. The aggressor most believe that should he attack is shall be as though his people had never existed.
Posted by: Lou Gots at January 22, 2007 4:06 PMWhat ignorance?
Posted by: dna at January 22, 2007 5:42 PMdna: Most likely, OJ is referring to "President Ahmadinejad, by then in his second or third term..." Note the other stories involving Ahmadinejad's weakness and the Ayatollah's disapproval.
Then again, don't count your ex-presidents until they're exed.
Posted by: Just John at January 22, 2007 7:00 PMWhat desire to exterminate Israel?
Posted by: oj at January 22, 2007 8:44 PMIts more of a pledge or state vow than a desire:

RAFSANJANI SAYS MUSLIMS SHOULD USE NUCLEAR WEAPON AGAINST ISRAEL
TEHRAN 14 Dec. (IPS) One of Iran's most influential ruling cleric called Friday on the Muslim states to use nuclear weapon against Israel, assuring them that while such an attack would annihilate Israel, it would cost them "damages only".
Hey, isn't he one of those "moderate" clerics you keep talking about?
Posted by: dna at January 22, 2007 9:15 PMSo, no Ahmedinejad and a six year old bit from Rafsanjani where he sounds like Netanyahu on Palestine?
The Wannassee Protocol was more than six years after the publication of Mein Kampf.
Besides, you make it sound like "destroy Israel" is just Ahmedinejad - when in fact it's the entire Iranian leadership, even those who criticize him.
Please provided one example of an Iranian official openly condemning Ahmedinejad's and Rafsanjani's call to destroy Israel.

Posted by: dna at January 23, 2007 6:15 AMNo, I've pointed out that it isn't even Ahmedinejad and you've conspicuously failed to show anything to the contrary.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has openly called for Israel to be wiped off the map..."As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map," said Ahmadinejad, referring to Iran's revolutionary leader Ayat Allah Khomeini. His comments were the first time in years that such a high-ranking Iranian official has called for Israel's eradication
Posted by: dna at January 23, 2007 10:53 AMPassive voice. In that speech he referred to the Israeli occupation of palestine--which everyone agrees must be wiped out. What he's said generally is the same thing that Ariel Sharon has, that time and demography is against Israel and that Islam will inherit the husk. Of course, he fails to understand that the same forces are emptying out Persia.
Posted by: oj at January 23, 2007 11:42 AM"Israel must be wiped off the map," said Ahmadinejad
That's passive? Not where I come from.
Posted by: dna at January 23, 2007 11:44 AMYou're not American? See, we say: we will destroy the Iranian nuclear program.
He has to speak rather airily about events in which he'll play no part.
The simple reality is that we will bomb Iran. They won't bomb us.
Posted by: oj at January 23, 2007 11:57 AMOh I see. The little scamp didn't mean it. He was just kidding.
OJ, you have something seriously wrong with you.
I mean who else besides you on planet Earth also thinks he's just kidding?
So do you still count Rafsanjani as a "moderate"?
The munchkins want to know, is he a good mullah or a bad mullah.
Posted by: dna at January 23, 2007 12:29 PMStill? Rafsanjani is a conservative.
Posted by: oj at January 23, 2007 2:40 PMHe's not kidding, just foolish.
Posted by: oj at January 23, 2007 2:43 PMWell are there any Iranians (conservative, moderate, whatever) who don't want to nuke Israel?
Has there been any criticism of Ahmadinejad by Iranians of his plan to nuke Israel?
The president of a country is so foolish as to not know the status of his own nuke development program?
I keep wating for you to produce actual evidence to back up your bizaare claims.
Bottom Line: Why are you cheering for the bad guys?
Yes.
He has no such plans.
He knows the status which is why he's reduced to bluster.
There is no evidence that Iran has a serious nuclear program--how would one produce evidence disproving absent evidence?
Ahmedinejad isn't a good guy which is why he's in so much trouble.
