WHISTLIN' DIXIE:

Biden charms local GOP (LEE BANDY, 12/03/06, thestate.com)

It was unlike most Columbia Rotary Club luncheons.

The speaker was U.S. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, a likely candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. [...]

The senator then pounced on a member’s announcement that the club would hold its annual Christmas party at the state Department of Archives and History where members could view the original copy of the state’s Articles of Secession.

Biden asked, “Where else could I go to a Rotary Club where (for a) Christmas party the highlight is looking at the Articles?”

Biden was on a roll.

Delaware, he noted, was a “slave state that fought beside the North. That’s only because we couldn’t figure out how to get to the South. There were a couple of states in the way.”

The crowd loved it.

You don't need a weatherman to see which way the wind is blowing.

Joe Biden, Son of the Old South.

If Slippery Joe Biden is a-courting Republicans in a blue state like Maryland it means he's going to try to beat Hillary for the nomination in 2008 by a) running to her right (good luck with that, Joey), and b) putting together a southern strategy that appeals to all those Heath Shuler voters.

In other words, look for Biden to start talking about the depth of his faith in 3...2...1...

Let's see....

Trent Lott makes a (poor) joke ostensibly supporting segregation and has to resign from Senate GOP leadership.

-AND-

A potential Democrat presidential candidate seems to regret the fact that his home state was unable to fight as part of the Confederacy.

I'm not holding my breath awaiting the public outcry for his immediate resignation.

H.D., Biden gave a speech in Kentucky (I think) last year in which he generously offered to cram his rosary beads down the throat of the next Republican to tell him he wasn't religious. (He's a Roman Catholic of the Mario Cuomo / John Kerry variety.)

I have dreams of luring him to the front door of our local abortion clinic and getting the cameras to catch the resulting scuffle on film...

I'll bet Biden is the first Democrat to start talking about post-Castro Cuba (and he'll probably attack Hillary for the whole Elian mess, too).

Just wait until he starts talking about his vast Senate experience.
