Students Cry ‘Death to the Dictator’ as Iranian Leader Speaks (NAZILA FATHI, 12/12/06, NY Times)

Students disrupted a speech by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday at a major university in Tehran, setting fire to photographs of him and throwing firecrackers.

The protesters chanted “death to the dictator” and demanded the resignation of Alireza Rahai, a conservative and the chancellor of the institution, Amirkabir University, the Iranian Student News Agency reported.

Mr. Rahai was appointed to the post after Mr. Ahmadinejad was elected. Amirkabir, a polytechnic university in downtown Tehran, has been a center of student dissent.

It was the first major public protest against Mr. Ahmadinejad since his election more than a year ago.

Mr. Ahmadinejad cut his speech short and left as his security guards tried to stop angry students, who kicked at the car that carried him away, witnesses said.

College students do similar things in this country and the effect on Iranian politics will be the same as it is in this country. Zilch.

Tell LBJ it has no effect.

h-man is 100% correct. Of course OJ could be taking one of his famous "long views" towards things, meaning Ahmadinejad will be dead one day of old age. The fat lady has a lot of warming up to do.

But LBJ never arrested, totured and beheaded his opponents, did he?

We arrested, beat, and killed them, yes. But I'm not aware of any domestic beheadings.

Of course, at one time people thought it was preposterous to believe the Iron Curtain would come down. Wouldn't it be lovely to see Amadinejad wind up against a wall like Ceaucesceau?

If there is retribution against the students and/or other dissidents, particularly if it is late at night and summarily violent, then we'll know Senor Mahmoud won't go gently. If he can't restrain or retaliate, then OJ might have a point. But my guess is the long knives are being sharpened already. The US needs to be ready to gaslight the bad guys and get all the private armies looking under every bed. Imagine if the SS had been forced into doing that in 1934.

In line with M. Murcek's comment - I know it won't happen, but how ironic if Ahmadinejad and Khameini wound up against the same wall, together.
