KNOW ANY AMERICAN JEWS WHO SPEAK YIDDISH? (via Tom Morin):

US Arabs Don’t Speak Arabic (Sahar Kassaimah, 12/03/04, IOL)

Many Arab American families and educators are worried that the majority of US-born children from Arab origin do not speak or understand the Arabic language.

"The Arabic language for any Muslim living in America or the West is vital and crucial," Noreldeen Al-Giyash, Principle of Peace Academy full time Islamic School at Tulsa, Oklahoma, told IslamOnline.net.

"From my experience in this field, I could tell you not more than 2% of American Arab Muslim children could really speak the language, understand and comprehend it," added Gyashi, an expert in education for more than 17 years.
We're America--this is what we do.

It always pains the immigrant parents that their children rarely want to learn the language of the old country, whether that country is Germany, Poland, China, Japan or Arabia. The only exception seems to be Mexico, but even then, a knowledge of Spanish will enable them to give detailed orders to their lawnmowers, cooks and nannies.

I'm not so sure of this. When I was called for jury duty recently, out of a pool of 30 potential jurors, 3 spoke arabic. (Phoenix AZ, the victim only spoke arabic so the judge asked how many spoke it and if they would abide by the translations)

In accordance with the real American motto ("We shall take your biological, technological, and cultural distinctiveness and make it part of our own."), we absorbed much of Yiddish. Maybe we can do the same for Arabic.

Oy vey JH of course we can absorb Arabic if the Arabic speakers come here to become Americans. If not, then I have a real problem with them.

Yiddish expressions, like words and phrases of other languages, entered the vernacular on their own. There was no implied moral equivalence that for every tit there must be a tat.

No one comes here to lose their ethnic identity, we don't give them a choice.
