IS IT STILL A MYTH IF NO ONE BELIEVES IN IT?:

Who Gives to Charity? (JOHN STOSSEL, December 7, 2006, NY Sun)

[T]he idea that liberals give more is a myth. Of the top 25 states where people give an above-average percentage of their income, all but one, Maryland, were red — conservative — states in the last presidential election.

"When you look at the data," says a professor at Syracuse University, Arthur Brooks, "it turns out the conservatives give about 30 percent more. And incidentally, conservative-headed families make slightly less money."

Researching his book, "Who Really Cares" (arthurbrooks.net), Mr. Brooks found that the conservative/liberal difference goes beyond money:

"The people who give one thing tend to be the people who give everything in America. You find that people who believe it's the government's job to make incomes more equal, are far less likely to give their money away."

Conservatives are even 18% more likely to donate blood.

The second myth is that people with the most money are the most generous. But while the rich give more in total dollars, low-income people give almost 30% more as a share of their income.

"The most charitable people in America today are the working poor," Mr. Brooks says.

Are there really people, other than liberals, whoi think liberals are generous?

Why is this a surprise? Liberals want big daddy to take care of the messy stuff, so they can dream lofty dreams of utopia and not have to be engaged with the great unwashed, except at election time, of course.

I don't think it's that bad. Most of the Liberals I know are in debt, despite making good money. I think they worry about the status games more then the Right does, and that's expensive. Most of them never have enough money, so there is nothing to give to charity, and never a feeling of security. That fear and shame gets projected onto people who make less money then them. If they went bankrupt making $70,000 a year, how horrible it must be for someone making $20,000!

Here's a posting by someone who thinks the Left have done a great job of selling themselves as more generous than the GOP.

Raoul:

My thought exactly. But I doubt if even a link to himself will make a difference here.

BTW, I wonder if Hillary Clinton is still giving away Bill's underwear and claiming a deduction for it. Or if Al and Tipper gave away for than $353 this year.

Liberals, relying as they do on a faceless bureaucracy to take care of them, can never be secure. Only those who rely on themselves, with a little help now and then from their friends, can ever feel secure.
