THE SENATOR FROM SELF:
In Following His Own Script, Webb May Test Senate's Limits (Michael D. Shear, 11/29/06, Washington Post)
At a recent White House reception for freshman members of Congress, Virginia's newest senator tried to avoid President Bush. Democrat James Webb declined to stand in a presidential receiving line or to have his picture taken with the man he had often criticized on the stump this fall. But it wasn't long before Bush found him."How's your boy?" Bush asked, referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq.
"I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President," Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.
"That's not what I asked you," Bush said. "How's your boy?"
"That's between me and my boy, Mr. President," Webb said coldly, ending the conversation on the State Floor of the East Wing of the White House.
His next memoir is going to be called: Saving Private Webb. Posted by Orrin Judd at November 29, 2006 8:18 AM
No class. None at all.
Posted by: Mike Morley at November 29, 2006 8:38 AMWow, I can't say it better than Mr. Morley.
Webb must be a real fun guy at Thanksgiving dinner.
That is wretched behavior, coming from a man who served the Reagan White House. Surely, he realizes that when the President wants to have a word with you socially, you talk about what he wants to talk about.
This sort of behavior begs for reciprocity, should a Hillary get into the White House.
Posted by: Brad S at November 29, 2006 9:40 AMWhen your son's Commander in Chief asks "How's your boy?" You give an answer, if you give two sh**s about your son.
Posted by: Palmcroft at November 29, 2006 9:46 AMHe backstabbed Reagan, why wouldn't he frontstab W?
Posted by: oj at November 29, 2006 10:08 AMI stand corrected. Earlier I had stated that Webb had gravitas that George Allen lacked. Sorry.
Posted by: h-man at November 29, 2006 10:55 AMThe echo chamber of the MSM is hard to filter throught, H-man. They played you. Remember, and move on.
Posted by: Robert Mitchell Jr. at November 29, 2006 11:10 AMI would be very interested to hear what Webb's son has to say about Iraq. Bet his dad doesn't like it.
Posted by: ken at November 29, 2006 1:44 PMIt would be interesting to see the reaction if the Commander-in-Chief acceded to the new Senator's personal request and brought his son home right now.
Posted by: Mike at November 29, 2006 1:51 PMKen, Webb's son has nothing to say about Iraq. Active duty people are under orders to keep quiet.
Posted by: Robert Mitchell Jr. at November 29, 2006 2:17 PMWebb will be very lonely in the Senate, and I suspect the nutroots will have a surprise waiting for him in the 2012 primary.
Meanwhile, what will (has) he said about Iran, Syria, and North Korea?
No class is right.
Posted by: ratbert at November 29, 2006 3:49 PMSooner or later, Marine Webb will come home. One hopes that a White House invitation is waiting for him when he arrives.

Betcha he becomes Sen. Keating-McCain's best buddy in a matter of months.

4 years ago, I would second your prediction. But not now, with McCain aiming at 1600. He could try to enlist Webb in his merry band of mavericks, but I'll bet Webb would give him the same slap. Remember, McCain has been clamoring for more men in Iraq since the war started.
