Kei Igawa (Rotoworld, Nov. 28, 2006)

According to, the winning bid for Japanese left-hander Kei Igawa was for about $25 million.

Incredible. Igawa's stuff has drawn mixed reviews, and while he might be well ahead of MLB hitters in his first season in the U.S., it seems unlikely that he'll settle in as more than a third or fourth starter. If it costs a total of $40 million to bring him in for three years, we have a new candidate for the biggest bust of the winter. It's expected that we'll know tonight who won the bidding for Igawa.

I was disappointed the M's didn't land him, but watching the Yankees freak out like this is almost as good.

Feaking out would be surpassing the next best bidder by a whopping 20 million, as the Sawx did in a desperate attempt to make up for the Beckett and Clement fiascos.

Igawa's a lefty, which is important for NY. I suspect the mixed reviews are wrong. I've only seen clips of him and read what some of the major leaguers who've faced him have said, but I think he projects as a 2 or 3, rather than a 3 or 4.

He can spot a 92 mph fastball, changes speeds well, and has a good slider, which I think is his strike-out pitch, and he did strike out a lot of batters in Japan. He has a compact windup and gets the ball to the plate quickly. Looks like a Japanese Glavine.

And considering the crazy money that very mediocre players, especially pitchers, are getting this offseason, the deal might not be so bad. How much would it have cost to bring in a Lilly or a Zito?

Btw, shocking that the knucklehead at rotoworld thinks this is the bust of the winter -- after the Dodgers signed Pierre to that contract. Dude needs to get a grip.

Wow, we know who tops your prison-bitch list: Brian Cashman.

So the annual "my overspending is bigger than yours" contest between the two most evil franchises in professional sports is heating up again. Yawn.
