YOU CAN TAKE THEM OUT OF FRANCE, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FRANCE OUT OF THEM?:

Bouchard furor: Do Quebeckers work enough? (RHEAL SEGUIN, 10/18/06, Globe and Mail)

“We don't work enough,” [Lucien]. Bouchard said Monday night on the French-language TVA network. “We work less than Ontarians and infinitely less than Americans. We have to work harder.”

In the interview, Mr. Bouchard blamed what he called Quebeckers' poor work ethic and low productivity for the province's high debt and taxes and its economic stagnation.

He likened Quebec to an airplane flying with reckless disregard toward economic disaster.

They are French enough to squeal and resist and go through all kinds of ideological dog and pony shows, but American enough to face reality in the end with no small measure of resolve. Harper's surprising support in the last election didn't come from his sex appeal.

It is perfectly acceptable to order one's life around something other than material possessions. What is not acceptable is going on to covet the goods of those who have chosen otherwise.

Lou,

That's brilliant! Mind if I borrow it?

Kirk: It 's really not my thought at all. cf. Lk 12:16-20, esp v. 18:
"Thou fool! This night is thy soul demanded of thee, and these things thou hast provided, whose shall they be then?" Not quite the same thing as, "He who dies with the most toys, wins," eh?

Allow me to suggest that a balanced person should view the man who chases wealth as a thing in itself with a mixture of amusement and gratitude.
