WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH THE SURPLUS?:

Budget Deficit Drops to $250 Billion (ANDREW TAYLOR, 10/06/06, Associated Press)

The federal budget estimate for the fiscal year just completed dropped to $250 billion, congressional estimators said Friday, as the economy continues to fuel impressive tax revenues.

The Congressional Budget Office's latest estimate is $10 billion below CBO predictions issued in August and well below a July White House prediction of $296 billion.

W is who NRO thinks Reagan was.

It's always easier to show respect to your father than it is to your brother who you knew never was as smart as you and when given the chance to live amid the fertile intellectual climate of the Ivy League network chose to swill alcohol and live in the desolate wasteland of the decidedly non-Austin West Texas. They don't think he's an idiot, but they also don't think he has much to offer in the way of coservative intellectual foresight.

John - NRO are political purists. Nobody is conservative enough for them. They laud Reagan now but it easy to go back to the NRO archives where they trashed Reagan as a non-conservative just as tney do to Bush now. They would rather maintain their conservative principles and never win an election (and hence never put their principals in action) than bend a bit and have the problem of actually solving problems.

AWW --

The younger ones at NRO whoo were in their teens or 20s when Reagan was in office, are more the father-figure respect-for-authority types. The older ones probably did feel an intellectual superiority to Reagan, but had been out in the political wilderness so long they kept their egos far more in check and their fingers further away from the keyboard when it came to his perceived mis-steps than they have with GWB. They were willing to settle for the practical 20 years ago, now they lust for the perfect and pout when policy doesn't go 100 percent their way.
