Radical Islam finds US 'sterile ground': Home-grown terror cells are largely missing in action, a contrast to Europe's situation. (Alexandra Marks, 10/23/06, The Christian Science Monitor)

To understand why, experts point to people like Omar Jaber, an AmeriCorps volunteer; Tarek Radwan, a human rights advocate; and Hala Kotb, a consultant on Middle East affairs. They are the face of young Muslim-Americans today - educated, motivated, and integrated into society - and their voices help explain how the nation's history of inclusion has helped to defuse sparks of Islamist extremism.

"American society is more into the whole assimilation aspect of it," says New York-born Mr. Jaber. "In America, it's a lot easier to practice our religion without complications."

In a nation where mosques have sprung up alongside churches and synagogues, where Muslim women are free to wear the hijab (or not), and where education and job opportunities range from decent to good, the resentments that can breed extremism do not seem very evident in the Muslim community.

Home-grown terror cells are largely missing in action.

Of course they are. So are subway, bus, malls, and sports stadiums as targets for the suicide belt users. I doubt we'll ever see this type of terrorists attacks in the US simply because we are an armed Nation. Very much unlike Europe.

The day they start those type of attacks where 25 to 100 people are killed will be the day Mid-Eastern men will no long be able to move about the Nation with any sort of freedom.

Any attack on the US will be planned as a spectacular event with max damage, and most likely planned from somewhere outside the country using people brought in just for the purpose.

They're not stupid to the degree they'll allow small time attacks as they are fully aware they're not messing with unarmed Europeans.

There are no suicide bombers because they're afraid to die? Novel.

Islam is a religion of peace in the sense that there's nothing so peaceful as a dead trouble maker.

Since we already believe that in the U.S. (in contrast to Europe), it't less necessary for Muslims to take over the U.S.

Orrin, of course there are many willing to die for just killing a handful. What I'm saying is when they start doing the small attacks the entire population of Muslim males in the US will be watched like a hawk. Not only by the police but the armed citizen as well. This would be counterproductive to the Terror masters like Al Queda, Hamas, etc., who have bigger things in mind. They would not support this and I'm sure the cells here know it.

Would you not be a little more watchful going into a crowed mall is this were happening? Of course you would as would all of us.

Every white guy going in or out of a mosque will be photographed and put on the web.

Posted by: Sandy P at October 22, 2006 10:17 PM

When? They won't.

"Every white guy going in or out of a mosque will be photographed and put on the web." Then they will cover themselves up from head to toe with a burqa.

ic, you're right and that's the reason masks can't be tolerated in public. It has nothing to do with modesty (what a notion!!!) or God's commandments. It has everything to do with our security and the safety of our kids.

Those too "modest" to show themselves in public, should stay indoors ... and I've been assuming that everyone, regardless of their melanin, are being taped going in and out of mosques and other known places of Islamic terrorism.

Yeah, yeah, not all Moslems are terrorists, but those condemning terrorism are statistically too few to measure so how are we to know who they are.

Trust, but verify. Works for me.

Tut-tut, when you pretend Arabs aren't white you get a tad too close to the Applied Darwinism that drives much Islamophobia.

Posted by: oj at October 23, 2006 8:57 AM

OJ is correct - Arabs are Semitic.

However, if the FBI (or Homeland Security, or whomever) does not have a solid list of imams and prison chaplains and other Muslim leaders (i.e., like those in CAIR) who are into conspiracy, foreign intrigue, and subversion here at home, then something is wrong. While the US has not been 'fertile' ground for terror cells, it would be foolish to ignore any homegrown nutjobs here. After all, the American in the latest AQ videos has been charged with treason.

There aren't suicide attacks and Muslim riots here because we don't pack Muslims into ghettos and make them work as janitors for generations. Instead we let them live next door and open hotels and corner shops, work as engineers at top corporations, and otherwise do what every American wants to do, make a lot of money and raise a happy family.

Besides, around here blowing up buildings and starting fires is the province of rich white kids out to save the animals and liberate the earth. Would you want to get lumped in with those nutjobs?

Raoul, you made me laugh again. However, please give credit where credit is due. Not all the rich kids saving the whales are white.
