Ford called self a lawyer but did not pass bar exam (Michael Davis, 10/06/06, Chattanooga Times Free Press)

Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Harold Ford Jr. referred to himself as a lawyer earlier this week, but the congressman has not passed the bar exam.

Michael Powell, senior adviser to the Ford campaign, said U.S. Rep. Ford took the Tennessee bar exam in February 1997 and failed. He said that was the only time Rep. Ford has taken the test.

Any clown can pass.

Any clown can pass, but it takes a very special clown to lie about not having passed.

"It depends on what the definition if is is"

He should have tried three more times -- if he'd passed it on the fourth try, like Joe Biden's kid, he'd be a lock to become state attorney general, like Joe Biden's kid.

A real lawyer wouldda argued that the test was biased and that his mark should therefore be deemed a pass. Ford failed both tests.

Yet, come next January, he'll still be referred to as "Senator".

You callin' me a clown, OJ?

Raoul - if that comes about (Dems pick up Tennessee) then the GOP is really screwed.

I never passed the bar exam.

Neither did I, but then I don't call myself a lawyer either.

At least JFK Jr kept trying until he finally passed the exam.

Raoul, Harold Ford, JR will be an ex-rep in December because my mother-in-law and my uncle Joe won't vote for him. No Democrate can win in Tennessee without their votes. Look at the difference in the vote totals in the Democratic primary for Gov. Bredeson and Harold Ford, Jr.

Sorry, but the GOP has been coasting, and its gonna cost them. The Dems have shown already that they are going to be as nasty as possible without resorting to Brown Shirts. The GOP've brought a knife to a gunfight, and are going to not figure that out until the first Wednesday in November. Witness they way the GOP has gone defensive on the whole what-did-Hastert-know-and-when-did-he-know-it pseudo-scandal because that's what the Stupid Party is demanding of them. If the guy is deserving of being jettisoned, then the Gingrich treatment is in order, after the debacle, not now. (And if the GOP does lose, that's when I'll agree with the screechers that he should go.) Or look at the depths Webb, a supposedly decent guy, has plumbed in Virginia, or the way Cantwell has bought off all her potential attackers from the Left with not a peep from the big Upper Left Washington media.

(And that doesn't include the vote fraud which exclusively benefits the Dem, and which really does matter in close races, as Rossi and Gorton have found out the hard way here in Washington.)

For a padded resume to hurt someone, it has to be mentioned repeatedly. No paper is going to follow up on this, and if the GOP candidate tries, he's immediately going to get called a racist. This is a non-issue, and will be forgotten and forgiven by election day.

It (a Dem victory) is not an outcome I particularly desire, as a victory this fall will delay the ultimate defeat of the Left by at least a decade, and make the '008 elections even nastier as the GOP, in their ham-handed ways, try to emulate what seems to be the winning formula.

Then again, I'm a pessimist because optimists can't be pleasantly surprised.

It's not about Democrates v Republicans. It's about the Ford family in Tennessee. Remember all politics are local.

Voters don't care about that stuff.
