HECK, HE'S BARELY EVEN BILL CLINTON:

Pol: Foley's lousy, but he's no Ted (KENNETH R. BAZINET, 10/12/06, NY DAILY NEWS)

The rancorous debate over disgraced ex-Rep. Mark Foley hit a new low yesterday when a GOP congressman said indiscretions with a male page were nothing compared to Sen. Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick incident.

Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) was trying to defend GOP House Speaker Dennis Hastert when he took aim at the Massachusetts Democrat.

"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," Shays told The Hartford Courant.

"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.

Bravo Congressman Shays for speaking the obvious truth. Let's hope there are other Republicans willing to talk about Democratic skeletons residing in the back of closets (and I don't mean gays) all over the country.

Shays' image as one of the most RINO of House Republicans over the years makes his howitzer aimed at Farrell all the more effective -- had one of the more partisan GOPers uttered the same truth about Teddy, the cries of mean-spiritedness would have erupted from the big media outlets, never mind the idea of trying to tie Shays to Foley's graphic instant messages should have earned Farrell some sort of scrutiny.

But Shays' actions and comments over the years going against his own party has made him the John McCain of the House of Representatives in earning praise from the press -- they could try and turn on him now and make him into another Newt Gingrich, but it's unlikely to stick in the minds of his district's voters.

Yes, there's that too. About time they all see the light of day.
