The shattered right leg of top Uruguayan soccer player Dario Silva was amputated after he was thrown from his car in a highway accident, hospital officials said Monday.

Nowadays, recovery isn't as crazy as it sounds -- I saw a kid from the Texas Panhandle this past April at a high school regional track and field meet in Odessa running in the 800 meter relay on one of the new flexible metal artificial legs (one of those things where you have to do a double-take to see if what you think you're seeing is actually happening). So you can do some pretty strenuious stuff with the new artificial legs, though kicking a soccer ball with one still might be a little difficult.
