ANOTHER REASON YOU HAVE TO BE ROOTING FOR THEM:

'God Bless America' delays Leyland's post-ejection argument (Danny Knobler, 9/01/06, Booth Newspapers))

Leyland wasn't happy with a strike Hoye called on the next-to-last pitch of the top of the seventh, and he said something. Leyland didn't think he deserved to be ejected, but he was. Then the inning ended, and Leyland came onto the field to press his point.

The only problem was that Yankee Stadium public-address announcer Bob Sheppard was asking for a moment of silence. Argument delayed.

"In no way, shape or form would I ever be disrespectful,'' said Leyland. "But you don't tell the umpire, `Time out, I've got to listen to Kate.'"

Actually, Leyland stopped arguing during the moment of silence, and also during "God Bless America.'' And then he started arguing again.

Jim's interrupted tirade was a thing of beauty to watch. Too bad the umps didn't have the sense of humor to let him stay in the game, though.

If Jim Leyland is not Manager of the Year, the award is a farce.

The Tigers are reeling. And they're still unable to beat a quality team.

Even if they manage to hold off the Twinkies and Real Sox and limp into the playoffs, they're done in round one.

With that pitching staff, however, the future looks bright. As long as they can put some semblance of a lineup together. B/c what they send up to the plate is pathetic. Those guys'll swing at anything.

Leyland has had a bad month. In terms of managerial decisions, Mr. Marlboro was 0 for August. Only Dusty Baker could have mangled this team in worse fashion. Hope he can get his head together.

I liked Leyland's other comment - "I say less to them than any other manager in this league, and they threw me out?"
