NOTEWORTHY? IT'S A TRUISM:

Ronald Reagan: Cut-and-Runner? (The Nation, Aug 11, 2006)

In a recent speech, Vice President Dick Cheney trotted out the Republicans' ugly, low-road campaign tactic of positioning themselves as strong and the Democrats as weak on national security. Nothing new there.

But what was really worth noting is that Cheney essentially called Ronald Reagan a cut-and-runner, who had emboldened the extremists with his withdrawal from Beirut in 1983.

Cheney essentially called Ronald Reagan a cut-and-runner,

Well, compared to what the Nation called (and still calls) Reagan that's a compliment.

More important, Reagan knew in 1983 that there was a larger threat that the country needed to focus on.

The Nation opposed him then.

No one seriously thinks (Buchanan doesn't count) that today Reagan would leave Iraq without securing it first.

The Nation would oppose him now too.
