Fewer high school students having sex, report says (Reuters, 8/10/06)

Fewer U.S. high school students are having sex, and the ones who do are less likely to have multiple partners, according to a report issued Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some 46.8 percent of students said they engaged in sexual intercourse in a 2005 survey, down from 54.1 percent in 1991, according to the report. Some 14.3 percent of students in 2005 said they have had multiple partners, defined as sex with four different people during one's lifetime. That figure is down from 18.7 percent in 1991.

Hardly surprising that the Puritan Nation is unique in the "developed" world for its declining social pathologies.

Teenagers never want to be like their parents. It's just that teens of boomers and early Gen-Xers have a better rationale than most.

Both my parents smoked cigarettes...

...I never found them appealing at all.

I find the number four as the definition of "multiple partners", intriguing. Why not two, or three or fifteen?

I am totally skeptical of all such student surveys. It only takes a few jokers or paranoid types to skew the results. I remember taking a drug survey in elementary school, and we thought it was fun to check off drugs we had supposedly taken, even though we were all totally straight and naive little suburbanites. I've always wondered if the surveyers really thought Green Acres Elementary had a group of opium smokers.
