WHAT'S A WORD FOR LESS THAN GENEROUS?

Romney apologizes for use of expression: To some, `tar baby' is racial pejorative (David Abel, Boston Globe, 7/31/06)

Governor Mitt Romney yesterday apologized for using the expression "tar baby" -- a phrase some consider a racial epithet -- among comments he made at a political gathering in Iowa over the weekend.

"The governor was describing a sticky situation," said Eric Fehrnstrom, the governor's spokesman. ``He was unaware that some people find the term objectionable, and he's sorry if anyone was offended."...

"The best thing for me to do politically is stay away from the Big Dig -- just get as far away from that tar baby as I possibly can," he said in answer to a question from the audience.

The expression "tar baby" has had different meanings over the years.

A definition from Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary traces the expression to the tar baby that trapped Br'er Rabbit in an Uncle Remus story by Joel Chandler Harris, which became popular in the 19th century. The dictionary now defines the expression as "something from which it is nearly impossible to extricate oneself."

But it also has been used as a pejorative term for dark-skinned blacks....

As for Romney's use of the expression, Pastor William E. Dickerson of the Greater Love Tabernacle in Dorchester called it ``a poor choice of words."

"There are some words that we should eradicate from our vocabulary, so we don't use them inappropriately," he said. "Saying someone is a 'tar baby' is like calling them the black sheep of the family. Kids with darker skin were often teased, and they would cringe at hearing it. That's why we should avoid it, especially a public servant."

I have to admit to avoiding the wonderfully expressive term "tar baby" out of an excess of caution, but "black sheep?"

Tony Snow had to qualify himself after using that expression a couple of weeks ago, so it's no surprise the Boston-based media following Romney would jump on him about its use here.

Now if the governor says there's a black cloud hanging over the Big Dig project, and they go after him for that, then I presume they'd also have to charge Gaia herself was racism for making severe thunderstorms dark in color.

"I whine, therefore I am right."

Please.

Language must change to prevent bad thoughts. This is doubleplusgood. Uncle Remus is ungood.

Recall the recent story from England where "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was being changed to "Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep" in order to avoid offending...well, someone or other.

This sort of blackguardry is demeaning to those of African or partial African descent. Those who advance it appear as either thin-skinned neurotics or cynical bullies.

Why doesn't anybody stand up to this sort of PC bullying? The first guy who responds with something along the lines of, "No, I can't apologize--I meant no offense by that phrase, and I can't imagine anyone outside of a press who wishes to gin up controversy where none exists actually would be offended", jumps to the number one spot in a presidential campaign, it would seem.

My blood pressure rises every time I hear political types talk about "whitewashes." And don't get me started on the weatherman callously referring to "whiteouts" during the winter.

Rick: That't the problem, don't you see. This sort of thing is a surrender to racist assumptions. We do not talk this way too much in public now, but the linguistic residues persist.

Light and whiteness are associated with excellence and purity. What is more, favorable associations attach to whiteness as a matter of race, as in "That's White of you," or "Act like a White man." Honestly, now, who considers whiteness a slur?

Thus exaggerated sensitivity to such speech is an ongoing admission of sense of infertiority and ressentment.
