TONY THE TORY VS. THE LEFT:

Police may get wider powers to help 'decent majority' (Philip Johnston, 24/06/2006, Daily Telegraph)

Tony Blair yesterday signalled that he was ready to give the police more summary powers to deal with alleged offenders as he sided with "the decent law-abiding majority" against the political and legal establishment.

Only Bill Clinton as regularly sided against his own party.

Police don't need more power, the entire system needs to replace catch-and-release with incapacitory incarceration. They need to build the prisions as high as it takes to store the bad guys until they're too old to hurt people.

If things are too easy for the police, they just become sloppier and sloppier, resulting in bad prosecutions, sometimes of the wrong persons.

The check on this is the market. When the consumers of public safety, the electorate. are sufficiently dissatisfied with public safety, they should vote the bums out and start over. If they are not doing so because their system is so warped by irrational considerations such as class envy and multiculturalism, why then they have earned their place on the ash-heap.,
