NO MEAT? WEIRDOS:
Oddballs tried mix of creeds & religions (JEANNE DEQUINE in Miami, ADAM LISBERG in Chicago and HELEN KENNEDY in New York, 6/24/06, NY DAILY NEWS)
The details emerging yesterday about the seven accused wanna-be jihadists did not make up a picture of your standard Islamic terrorists.Either Haitian immigrants or the sons of Haitian immigrants, they belonged to an off-the-wall Biblical sect called the Seas of David that mixed elements of Christianity and Islam.
Their leader, Narseal Batiste, was known in his native Chicago for his large, wooden walking stick, flowing robes and matching headdress - either white or purple.
"He used to stand on the corner for a long time talking up at the sky and holding a big stick," said Sarah Villasensor, 53, who owns the Latina Jewelry store a few doors down from where Batiste used to live. "He would stay for hours right there."
Batiste, at 32 the oldest of the group, imposed an ascetic regime: no women, no booze, no drugs, no meat and lots of martial arts. They affected a military bearing and wore black uniforms with homemade shoulder patches that some described as a Star of David.
"We study and we train through the Bible, not only physical but mentally," a member calling himself Brother Corey told CNN. "We are not no terrorists."
They don't believe in the Trinity but are down with the double negative. Posted by Orrin Judd at June 24, 2006 9:47 AM
I don't know how this comment appeared at the bottom of the previous post.
Read somewhere this morning that Islamic leaders want the media to stop referring to them as Moslems or identifying them as Al Qaeda operatives.
Imagine, even terrorists have standards and these guys don't measure up.
Posted by: erp at June 24, 2006 2:01 PMThey study and train from the Bible, physically and mentally?
Do they walk around swinging jawbones? Do they bang on pots and pans? Was Batiste looking for fire to come down from Heaven on Miami? Did he try to separate the waters in Biscayne Bay?
Poseurs, gangsters, and bungholes, all. Now they can be their own gang in federal prison.
Posted by: jim hamlen at June 24, 2006 4:33 PMRacist nut-jobs. We can already predict what their defense will be, we have seen it before: "My client is a dumb loser with delusions of adequacy; he is too stupid and petty to be taken seriously."
The suspects' use of the word, "devils," tells us a lot. That, of course, is how the Black Muslims refer to white people. The usage comes from the teachings of Muhammad Fard, their founder, held to be the apotheosis of Allah himself.
Only the Black people are real human beings, the sect holds. White people are really "devils," sort of like golems, formed by the evil magician, Yakoob, to take the world away from its rightful masters.
We may at once dismiss the Shockleyite implications of this teaching, as being more or less equivalent in silliness to white and yellow delusions. The point here is that these are literal folk-enemies.
I am already uncomfortable about this case. More should have been allowed to happen before springing the trap. Overt acts unquestionably beyond mere preparation would have made it much easier to get this case past a Moussawi-type juror.
Furthermore, the case appears to be over-charged. The Government seems to be charging a Law of War case, ala ex Parte Quirin, in civilian court.
If these people are like German submarine-borne commandos, then let them be tried like German submarine-borne commandoes. If they are domestic criminals, why must they be charged as foreign agents?
We would need to see the indictments to know what is happening. We may be apprehensive that the charge of being an al-Qaeda agent is unnecessarily suseptable to an entrapment defense where their only "contact" with al-Qaeda was with a government agent so posing.
Posted by: Lou Gots at June 25, 2006 12:42 AMThis may also be a Keystone Komedy Kaper designed to inform the public that there are wannabe terrorists like this living among us.
I noticed only the merest gossamer whisper about prison conversions in the news accounts in the msm. Has there been any actual reporting on these guys other than the compulsory TV interviews with family and neighbors saying what fine people they are.
