TOPPER RETURNS:
Senate Advances Sweeping Immigration Bill (RACHEL L. SWARNS and JOHN HOLUSHA, 5/24/06, NY Times)
Chances that the Senate will pass a bill overhauling the immigration system increased sharply today when senators voted 73 to 25 to limit debate on the immigration bill and the number of amendments that can be offered. The cloture vote makes it likely that final action on the bill, which would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who have been in the country for over five years, will take place this week, possibly on Thursday.
Shut your eyes and you can see Ronald Reagan ducking his head and chuckling as George W. Bush, who cut taxes more than he, likewise gets ready to create more Americans than the Gipper managed to. Posted by Orrin Judd at May 24, 2006 2:44 PM
I just hope there are enough GOPers in the house who will go along.
Posted by: mc at May 24, 2006 3:30 PMI'd love to see Bush cite St. Ronnie when he signs the immigration bill into law.
NRO, Powerline, Polipundit, Malkin et al will have to be sedated.
Posted by: Jim in Chicago at May 24, 2006 4:28 PMI think the Meese op-ed today was an attempt to give the NRO types cover on opposing Bush while praising Reagan. They don't have to directly say Reagan was wrong now; they just have to say Ed Meese said Reagan was wrong.
