THE CALIPH LIVES IN THE WASHINGTON POST:

Extremism Isn't Islamic Law (Kyai Haji Abdurrahman Wahid, May 23, 2006, Washington Post)

It is vital that we differentiate between the Koran, from which much of the raw material for producing Islamic law is derived, and the law itself. While its revelatory inspiration is divine, Islamic law is man-made and thus subject to human interpretation and revision. [...]

All of humanity, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, is threatened by the forces of Islamist extremism. It is these extremists, masquerading as traditional Muslims, who angrily call for the death of Abdul Rahman or the beheading of Danish cartoonists. Their objective is raw political power and the eventual radicalization of all 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide. Western involvement in this "struggle for the soul of Islam" is a matter of self-preservation for the West and is critical given the violent tactics and strength of radical elements in Muslim societies worldwide.

Muslim theologians must revise their understanding of Islamic law, and recognize that punishment for apostasy is merely the legacy of historical circumstances and political calculations stretching back to the early days of Islam. Such punishments run counter to the clear Koranic injunction "Let there be no compulsion in religion" (2:256).

People of goodwill of every faith and nation must unite to ensure the triumph of religious freedom and of the "right" understanding of Islam, to avert global catastrophe and spare millions of others the fate of Sudan's great religious and political leader, Mahmoud Muhammad Taha, who was executed on a false charge of apostasy. The millions of victims of "jihadist" violence in Sudan -- whose numbers continue to rise every day -- would have been spared if Taha's vision of Islam had triumphed instead of that of the extremists.

The greatest challenge facing the contemporary Muslim world is to bring our limited, human understanding of Islamic law into harmony with its divine spirit -- in order to reflect God's mercy and compassion, and to bring the blessings of peace, justice and tolerance to a suffering world.

Islamicism is a Muslim heresy just as Marxism, Darwinism, and Freudianism were Judeo-Christian heresies and pushed by the same sorts of people for the same reasons--it's just about political power.

I'll see Mr. Wahid's Sura 2:256 and raise him:

"Fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)." Surah 9:5

"If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost." Surah 3:85

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the last day.. Nor acknowledge the religion of truth, (even if they are) of the people of the Book, until they pay the Jizya (taxes) with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." Surah 9:29

Rick:

That's not only not contradictory but consistent with what Jews and Christians believe of their own faith.

I can't speak for Christians, but your latest comment regarding Jews---and Judaism---is patently not true.

Of course it's true. Not only do Jews fight over who's Jewish but require that Israel be a Jewish state. That's why they're ditching Palestine:

--God's mercy and compassion, and to bring the blessings of peace, justice and tolerance to a suffering world.--

The world will be at peace when the world is under islam is not an option.

Whose definition of peace, justice and tolerance.

When I have a church and Christian worship in the majik kingdom, we'll talk.

Fact is, however, that the Jews are not slaying---and are not threatening to slay---Pagans, or non-Jews, wherever they find them.

Fact is, according to Judaism, Islam and Christianity, certain reservations about Roman Catholicism, notwithstanding, are both monotheistic religions.

Fact is, according to Judaism, although monotheism is preferable, and Judaism the preferred form of monotheism, non-Jews can worship who and what they want, as long as they adhere to the seven "laws of Noah" (Noahide laws). That is, while normative Judaism---like practically every other organized faith--- contends that it may be the preferred faith, it recognizes that Judaism is not for everyone (hence its absolute acceptance of monotheism and qualified acceptance of paganism).

Are there conflicts and debates between certain groups of Jews regarding the religion? Yes, there are, and they can be acrimonious. But normative Judaism has proven itself to be, given the chauvinistic predilection of human beings, pretty tolerant, all things considered.

Regarding giving up the territories to defend Israel and preserve the Jewish character of the country, you are confusing religion and politics. (Needless to say, any Israeli withdrawal will not solve the problem of conflict in the region, since it doesn't address the "root cause" of the conflict, which is Israel's existence.)

Fact is Israel is cutting loose its Muslims in order to maintain a distinctively Jewish state. Fact is that Jews consider Christianity and Islam to be false and contrary to God. Fact is Muslims don't slaughter pagans, Christians or Jews wherever they find them. The three Abrahamic faiths are more similar than not.

Posted by: oj at May 24, 2006 11:08 AM

oj,

The three Abrahamic faiths do differ though in how long they've been around. To paraphrase Pope J2P2 concerning Judaism, Islam is the youngest brother in faith. As is often the case with a sibling, one wishes the little brat would just grow up.

Fact is christianity has an historic connection to the faith of Abraham, fact is Islam has no historic connection other than through revisionism, fact is the fundemental tenets of Islam are zero-sum, believer or infidel to be officially treated accordingly until submission. Fact is Islam teaches that martyrdom through sanctioned violence leads to paradise as well as booty gained through violence being just and deserved. Fact is the characteristic of the prophet most venerated is his miltary skill.

You ought to get out more (as well as read more Maimonides).

Posted by: Barry Meislin at May 24, 2006 12:28 PM

Christianity is likewise a revision--actually a universalization--of Judaism. We Reformed Judaism anmd now we're Reforming Islam. It's our Crusade that matters, not theirs and we've killed far more of them than they ever will of us.

Ed:

Yes, we're growing him up rather abruptly, having infantilized him via colonialism.

Christianity is a Jewish heresy. Protestantism is a Catholic heresy. Every religion is a heresy of the religion that preceded it.

Posted by: Robert Duquette at May 24, 2006 1:07 PM

No, they aren't. Christianity is perfectly compatible with Judaism. Protestantism is an argument over institutions, not faith. Islam, Marxism, Darwinism, and Freudianism are heresies.

Christianity has tolerated the secularists and materialists of Europe over the past 50 years. Will Islam be as tolerant, when it becomes ascendent in Eurabia?

Posted by: je at May 24, 2006 1:38 PM

je:

Christianity lost to the secularists and materialists in Europe because it was overly tolerant. Tolerance is the absence of values.

Wahid's pronouncement that, "Western involvement in the 'struggle for the soul of Islam' is a matter of self-preservation for the West. . .," gravely distorts the balance of forces.

The reformantion of Shinto shows the result of exhaustion of Western patience and forebearance.

Lou:

Rwecall though that some mistakenly still consider Europe to be part of the West. Sure Islam is no threat to us, but an unReformed Islam would matter to Europe.
