Inquiry into illegal immigrant cleaners at Home Office (Hélène Mulholland, The Guardian, May 19th, 2006)
An inquiry is under way today after it emerged last night that five illegal immigrants had been arrested at one of the immigration service's central London offices. The five were stopped by suspicious security guards when they could not show they had clearance to enter the building and did not start work before being detained.
Conservatives claimed the arrests on Wednesday night were proof that the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) - which has responsibility for tracking down and expelling illegal immigrants - was in "chaos".
No doubt tomorrow we shall read of the long lines of native Brits lining up to fill these vacancies.
Posted by Peter Burnet at May 19, 2006 10:58 AMActually, who would be more qualified to detect illegal immigrants than illegals? Perhaps they should be re-hired.
Posted by: pj at May 19, 2006 11:36 AMYes, of course. If we don't have illegals the inevitable result would be the garbage crisis that would destroy us all. Brilliant.

No doubt you feel safer at night knowing your cleaning staffs' papers are all in order.
Posted by: Peter B at May 19, 2006 12:33 PMI just have to get on record with this prediction:
Within weeks of ground breaking on our new Southern Wall, there will be a feature story about how it's being put up using illegal alien labor.
Posted by: JAB at May 19, 2006 12:58 PMI certainly hope so. I willing to pay for a empty gesture, but I'd rather not pay a lot.
