A TIP OF OURS:

Capps relieved, but knows hard work still ahead (Paul Meyer, April 03, 2006, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

It really hit Matt Capps here sometime Saturday night as he looked around his hotel room and saw nobody else in the room.

"No roommate," Capps said. "I had my own hotel room."

In the major leagues. To start the season. [...]

The difference in the meal money was another thing Capps noticed.

"That's nice, too," he said with a laugh.

Beginning today, he gets $83.50 per day for meals. If he were with Class AA Altoona, he would get $20 per day.

If you're eating $83 worth of food every day for six months out of the year, you're probably going to look like Sid Fernandez when the season's over.

I drafted him for $1 in my roto-league. Everyone looked at my like I was crazy. When he's closing games by the end of the season, I will be vindicated.

$83? The owners must think he'll be eating at their own concession stands.

Me too!

John:

Not really. Decent dinner in a big city can run that much alone: $10 app, $25 entree, $10 glass of wine (or two). Add tax and tip along with a cab ride each way and you're there.

Rick --

I can understand the occassional trip out to a high-priced restaurant, but the $83 meal money is the daily rate over a period of 180 days. That's a lot of pricey restaurants to hit, even if you throw in a fancy lunch and breakfast, unless you're taking your family or a bunch of friends with you everywhere or you're dating Anna Benson.

Don't clubhouses have pretty fancy post-game spreads for the players?

I knew I shouldn't have said anything. He didn't look too hot today.

A good manager doesn't bring him out for a second inning.
